What are good cameras for photography?
preferably cheaper ones, but not poor quality. I’m not the richest person, but I would really like to invest in a good camera for photography.

I would go for the D40x if you do not have a who lot of cash (thats Nikon). I personally use the Canon XTi which is about $300 more but it also is a bit more features for advance photography. If you are short on cash the D40x is a great way to go. And you can always upgrade to the D80 or higher later.

The truth is that you can make great photos with a simple consumer point-and-shoot camera, or take lousy shots with the most expensive Nikon. It’s not the camera that makes beautiful images; it’s the photographer. With a little knowledge and a willingness to make an adjustment here and there, you can squeeze big time photos out of the smallest digicam!
I currently use a Kodak P850 digital camera. It’s not very expensive, and has a lot of great features. It has a lot of programmed scene modes, and also the option to use it fully manual, if I should desire. For a film camera, I have a Nikon FM that was passed down to me from my father. Its a really old manual SLR camera, but it still works wonderfully even after 30 years! You can usually find that camera on ebay for a reasonable price used, as they stopped making in in the early ’80s. They have however, come out with the FM-10, which is pretty similar. Its a great student level SLR camera sold at a reasonable price, usually around $200.
Here’s a link below, if you’re interested in seeing what I’ve done with my Kodak. I haven’t uploaded any pictures from the Nikon just yet, as I need to replace my scanner.

Bottom end of the price range, I’d suggest compacts such as the Fuji Finepix A500 / A600 / A700 + F20 & F30
Mid-range, the Fuji S5200 (S5600/S5700?) / S6000fd (S6500fd) / S700 + Olympus SP-500uz / SP-510uz / SP-550uz
High-end, a choice between Fuji S9000 / S9100 (S9600) / Nikon D40 / Nikon D70s / Nikon D80 / Nikon D200
