Just as the term “Google it” and Facebook have become common household phrases in today’s world, wedding photojournalism is becoming the same way. Over the years, photography has evolved and changed, moving away from the more traditional style photos to a candid unposed style of shooting that catches the individuals in action, living life, and experiencing reality.

Photojournalism Defined

To understand what wedding photojournalism is, it is better to explain what photojournalism is in general. With photojournalistic photography, it is almost as if you can feel the breath that the person is breathing. You can see the flicker in his or her eyes. The laughter looks as if you can actually hear it ringing in your ears. The style of photojournalism tells the story through the images, unposed and unplanned. The pictures are raw, real, and natural. It is almost as if you are watching a documentary where a specific tone is set and the events are relatable to the person looking at the images.

Evolution of Wedding Photojournalism

Over the years, people began to waiver from the traditional direction from the photographers. Instead, the moments were allowed to unfold as natural and organically as possible. The term “wedding photojournalism” was actually penned by Denis Reggie, a former sports photographer, in 1980. He, along with others in the genre felt that this style of photography was more memorable and precious. However, each photographer has his or her own opinion of photojournalism and looks at the style very objectively. Although content is the most important element in shooting in a wedding photojournalistic style, choosing what to take pictures of, how to correctly expose it, the way the image should be cropped, and editing techniques are always debated. Because in the photojournalistic photography style the interpretation is up to the viewer, it is rare that two photographers will ever interpret the same scene or the same photo the same way.

Wedding Photojournalism Techniques

Photojournalistic wedding photographers always do their best to somewhat melt into the background when shooting a wedding. The goal is to stay unnoticed and be as inconspicuous as possible. While photographers do put together and gather groups for wedding group photos and formal portraits, the main style centers around the photojournalistic feel. The key method of delivering wedding and engagement photos to the clients is in chronological order – with wedding photojournalism and engagement photojournalism, it is very important that the images be viewed in order. Photojournalism embodies the telling of a story and this way, the viewer can see and experience the day moment to moment.

The Standard of Wedding Photojournalism

Shooting in a photojournalistic style requires the skill, talent, and experience necessary to view a scene and interpret it in a photojournalistic and creative way. While many amateur and professional photographers can shoot a wedding in a semi-photojournalistic style, the experience increases the value of your photography, assuring clients that in this genre, you truly have the training and background to portray this style of wedding photojournalism. I encourage ambitious and motivated photographers to apply to shoot with a photojournalistic wedding photographer and shadow photographers working out in the field. Photojournalistic photographers have worked hard to hone their skills over the years and are most are more than willing to share their knowledge of photojournalism with others who desire to learn!

Although digital photography is a new and innovative way to take photos it is still founded on traditional photography and incorporates many of the same ideas. Both digital and traditional photography need a lens with which to focus the light as well as a shutter that lets the light into the camera. The big difference between traditional and digital photography is how the camera captures the image.

In traditional photography a film is used which needs to be developed inside of a darkroom with the use of chemicals. This development process results in a “negative” which you will then to print so that you can see the picture. Digital photography uses what is called an electronic sensor. It’s this electronic sensor that catches the image of the picture. Millions of pixels make up the sensor, which then convert the light into a number. Instead of waiting for the photo to be developed a digital photo can be looked at almost immediately in the viewfinder of the camera.

Digital photographs use the number of pixels to determine the quality of the picture. Pixel count is often referred to as “resolution” and is measured in dimensions, such as 800×600. This is also known as the number of pixels per inch. A typical resolution for a computer monitor is 800×600. What this means is that the computer screen can display 800 pixels from one side to the other side and 600 pixels from the top of the display to the bottom. The total number of pixels would be 480,000. Digital photography uses resolutions that are higher than the computer monitor, often resulting in millions of pixels, or megapixels. If a digital camera has a resolution of 2048×1536 it has a total of 3.1 megapixels.

As previously mentioned, numbers represent the pixels. These numbers then determine the scale of colors that can be created. As an example, pictures that are black and white can be represented by megapixels that are only 8 bits long. As with binary arithmetic, an 8 bit number can then represent any decimal number from 0 to 256. This means that black and white pictures can have as many as 255 gray shades as well as black (0) and can also have white shades (256).

Larger numbers represent colors. For example, 16 bits per pixel can have a color scale of 65,536 different color shades while 24 bits per pixel can have over 16 million different types of colors. These days most digital cameras make use of 24 bits per pixel; however some professional cameras can have a color resolution that reaches 48 bits per pixel to create over 280 billion color shades.

The quality of a digital camera is affected by a few factors. Most times pixel resolution is considered to be one of the most important factors. You will want to choose the right pixel resolution for the size of pictures that you want to print. Remember that although the number of pixels in the photo won’t change those images with bigger dimensions will have less pixels per inch. This will result in less detail in the picture as the size increases.

Photography labs will print photos that are 300 pixels per inch. This standard measure will let you calculate just how many megapixels your digital camera should come with. The largest print you can get from a two megapixel camera (that has 300 pixels per inch) is a 5.8″x3.8″ picture. This is smaller than the standard 4″x6″ picture. A digital camera that has four megapixels will be able to print photos up to a size of 8.2″x5.4″ at about 300 pixels per inch.

You still have the ability to print larger photos. Keep in mind that photos which are printed at 200 pixels per inch will be less clear, however these photos will still be useable for many purposes. With this type of resolution you can get photo prints up to 8.7″x5.8″ with a two megapixel camera. And with a four megapixel camera you’ll be able to get pictures up to 12.2″x8.2″.

Now that you have some understanding of the differences between classic photography and digital photography you can narrow down your search for buying a used camera.

I’m planning to get a degree in Anthropology and perhaps Photography, Visual Arts, Art and Design, or Art Education? I’m so undecided! I was also wondering where I could go from there, what careers/jobs? Where I could teach if I ended up getting an education degree for my anthropology major? Like, high schools or college? Would I teach Anthropology or something more like Sociology?

Advertisement photography is by far one of the most competitive forms of photography. This is mainly due to the fact that you can earn far more money than in any other aspect of photographic industry.

Every day companies pay millions of dollars on advertisement; with one goal – to sell their product. Companies want to tell the reader that their product is best – so you must be able to match this.

The photographers work must be to the highest technical quality and he/she must have the ability to create a masterpiece from something simple. Close enough is just not good enough. Close enough will not sell a product.

To become an advertisement photographer one must first understand the market and understand what the client is looking for. The best way of understanding this is pick up a magazine and look at the ads. Study each image. Study the images you see on billboards or images that are used to advertise movies.

Most parts of advertisement photography can be classed as still life photography. So if you are interested in taking images for the advertisement market your first job is to set up your own home studio. This can be a great place to practice.

Every thing in your home can be photographed. Start off with a few glasses. But remember you are not trying to make the glasses look nice – you are trying to sell them.

The second thing you need is a large format camera. Buy a range of the best lenses. Slide film is your best choice for advertisement photography. The client may want to blow up the images to a billboard size.

The most important thing when starting off is creating a portfolio of your work. This can be sent to advertising agencies or can be shown directly to a company. Always have a few copies on standby. Also set up a web page. On-line advertising is growing at a spectacular rate. Your portfolio should also consist of a different range of images.

If you are thinking of using an advertisement agency, get their guidelines from them. These should be very helpful to you in understanding the market. Dealing with a well established agency should be very profitable for you if your photography is to par.

Advertisement can be seen everywhere – and about eighty percent of all ads use photography. Most advertisement these days consists of a few words and a stunning picture that should attract the viewer’s attention.

Infrared light is outside of the visible spectrum of light that makes up all the colors we see. Normally, when you see a blue t-shirt, it’s because that shirt is absorbing all the colors in the visible spectrum, but blue. Blue is being reflected and interpreted by our eyes, (basically).

Infrared light has similar properties, but what makes it so interesting and intriguing is the light is based on just purple (which is usually converted to black) and white. Foliage reflects all infrared light, so it ends up looking pure white. If an object has no infrared reflective properties, it just looks black. Normally you look at a tree and see green leaves, but with an infrared camera, the leaves are white, the trunk is black, the grass is white and a park bench would be black.

Traditional camera film is designed to capture visible light, but only works if the lens is open for a split second. Any longer and you over expose color and light to the film and nothing can be made of it. What is interesting, is that a fully exposed piece of film that has been processed (developed) will only allow infrared light to pass through it. So by using a digital camera that does not have an infrared blocker built in to the CCD, and removing the thin plastic infrared blocker inside the camera in front of the CCD, we can insert a few layers of exposed film in front of the lens (or inside the camera). This will produce an infrared image on a digital camera, as seen in the photography on my website, linked below.
